McKenzie Friend Services

Practical, affordable support if you plan to represent yourself in family court

Facing family court proceedings can feel overwhelming and isolating, especially when you're already dealing with the emotional turmoil of divorce. I understand this struggle because I've been there. Having navigated my own difficult divorce and family court proceedings, I know firsthand how daunting it feels to go through the UK court system.

If you can't afford the high costs of a family law firm or barrister, it can feel like you're left to navigate this complex system completely alone. A McKenzie Friend offers you an alternative option providing professional support and guidance at a fraction of the cost. Whilst unable to give legal advice, a McKenzie Friend can assist you in preparing for court and during each hearing, ensuring you have help and guidance when you need it most.

As your McKenzie Friend, I can sit beside you in court, help you prepare your case, and ensure your wishes are heard clearly and effectively.

What is a McKenzie Friend?

A McKenzie Friend is an officially recognised legal term in the UK, referenced in both legislation and judicial guidance.

Put simply, a McKenzie Friend supports a Litigant in Person - someone who is representing themselves in court - throughout the legal process.

How can a McKenzie Friend help me?

There are many ways I can help prepare you for court:

  • Completing application forms and paperwork

  • Drafting letters and correspondence

  • Explaining court processes

  • Offering guidance on case strategy

  • Preparation of position statements

  • Accompanying you to court

  • Take notes during your hearings

As a McKenzie Friend, I cannot speak directly to the judge or provide legal advice. However, if you cannot afford a solicitor or barrister, having support in advance and on the day can be invaluable.
